Selling by weight and length

Sell cheese by the kilogram or fabric by the metre — set the product up once, then type the weight at the till.

Most products are sold by the piece: 1, 2, 3. A product can instead be sold by weight (in kilograms, up to three decimals: 0.750 kg is 750 g) or by length (in metres: 1.25 m). The price on the product is then the price per kilogram or per metre, and the till charges what you weigh, to the piaster.

Setting a product up

  1. Open Products, then the product, to edit it.
  2. Under Sold by, press By weight (or By length). The Sale unit shows kg (or m).
  3. Under Quantity decimals, choose how fine the till may go: 3 takes 0.001 kg (a gram), 2 takes 0.01 m (a centimetre).
  4. If the product is linked straight to a stock item, check the line Take from stock … for each 1 kg. It says how much of the item one kilogram sold draws from stock.
  5. Save.

An item tracked by serial number is sold by the piece only: one serial is one physical unit.

Weighing at the till

Two ways, whichever is quicker:

  • Type the weight, then press the product. On the keypad type 0.75, then press Roumy cheese: one line of 0.75 kg is added.
  • Press the product first. With nothing typed, a weighed product never adds 1 kg: a Weight window opens. Type the weight on its keypad, check the total underneath, then press Confirm.

A scanned barcode of a weighed product also opens the Weight window.

Each weighing is its own line: two packs of cheese are two lines, never one line of both.

The ticket shows the weight with its unit — «0.75 kg» — and so do the receipt, the kitchen screen and the customer display.

Scale stickers

A label scale's sticker can carry the weight for you: scan it and the line is added at the weight on the sticker, with no Weight window. The owner sets it up once — see Scale barcodes.

Changing a weight

Select the line, then press − or +. On a weighed line they do not add or take away a kilogram: they open Change weight, already filled with the line's weight. Type the new weight and press Confirm. You can also type the weight on the keypad and press Qty, or press the line.

Add-ons on weighed products

A paid add-on (for example Sliced +5.00) is charged per kilogram, like the price: 0.75 kg sliced adds 3.75.

Returns

A weighed line can come back in part: in the return window, type 0.25 for a quarter of a kilogram. The refund is what the customer paid for that part. See Customer returns.

Reports

Sales reports show each weighed product's quantity with its unit (1.25 kg). Items sold counts a weighed line as one item: three loaves and two weighings of cheese are five items.
