How Major works in your shop
The devices in the shop, who does what, and the words you will meet in this guide.
- Who can do this
- Everyone
Major is a cashier and point-of-sale program that runs on a computer in your shop and does not need the internet to sell. Your data (sales, stock, customers) is stored on that computer.
The devices in the shop
| Device | What it does |
|---|---|
| Server PC | The main computer, where "Major Server" is installed. It holds the data and every other device talks to it. It must stay on while the shop is open. |
| Tills | Any computer or tablet running the Major till app, connected to the server over the shop's network. The server PC can be a till too. |
| Print program | A small helper that runs by itself with the till app and prints on the printer plugged into that computer. You never open it yourself. |
| Kitchen display | A screen or tablet in the kitchen that shows orders as soon as the cashier sends them (restaurants and cafés). |
| Customer display | A second screen facing the customer that shows the order and the total. |
Who does what
| Role | Their work in Major |
|---|---|
| Owner (Admin) | Everything: installation, settings, staff, devices, backups, licence. |
| Manager | Products and prices, stock, suppliers, reports, and keeping an eye on the cashiers. |
| Cashier | Opens the shift, sells, takes payment, closes the shift. Lands straight on the till. |
| Waiter | (Restaurants) Opens table orders and sends them to the kitchen. |
| Kitchen | Sees orders on the kitchen display and updates their state. |
| Viewer | Sees products, stock and reports without changing anything. |
Each role has permissions, and the owner can create new roles or give one person an extra permission (see Roles and permissions). If you cannot find a button this guide mentions, your account most likely does not have that permission.
Words you will meet often
- Shift: the time from when the cashier opens the drawer until they close it and count the money. One shift is open per branch at a time.
- Ticket: one order — the items the customer took and the money they paid.
- Department: a kind of sale such as Dine-In, Takeaway or Delivery. The department decides which screen the sale starts on.
- Z report: the summary printed when a shift closes: sales, payment methods and the drawer difference.
- Store: where the goods are kept. Every branch starts with one store, the main store.
For all the words, see the Glossary.
Where to start
